Important Fabrics Quality testing during production

Fabrics Quality Testing

Fabrics quality have to ensure by fabrics supplier before sending to the garments industry. Skew and Distortion tests are the most important quality tests for fabrics; skew and distortion quality are especially important for pants ( Bottom Garments).

How to control the quality

The most important quality issue for fabrics is distortion, if the fabrication has the risk of distortion, skew must be controlled during production. Two tests should be carried out during the production: skew test & distortion test.

  1. Skew Test (ASTM D3882)

We have demonstrated the test during the factory visit. The Skew Test is used to find out how many degrees of skew need to be adjusted during the skew control. The test is carried out in the greige state, comparing the skew difference between the before wash & after wash. The fabric needs to adjust the skew based on the result. The best method for the skew test is ASTM D3882.

    2. Distortion Test (AATCC 179)

Sample Preparation for Distortion after 3 washes Test (AATCC 179):

1. Lay the sample on a flat surface; make specimens parallel to the selvages to
the fabric length direction. Avoid the use of the sample area within 6" of the fabric width.
2. Take 3 Specimens each from the left side, center, and right side of the full-width fabric.
3. Mark each 27" x 24" (Length x Width) test specimen with three pairs of 18"
benchmarks parallel to the test specimen length and three pairs of 18" benchmarks
parallel to the test specimen width, each benchmark must be at least 2" from all test
specimen edges.

Washing Procedure:
Standard testing method refers to AATCC 179 at 3 Home Wash or care label washing.

Measurement and Calculation:
1. After specimens are conditioned, measure the distance between the opposite
corner diagonally across the specimen.
2. Subtract the smaller distance from the larger distance and convert the difference
to a percentage of the original before washing diagonal dimension.
3. Report the twist as a percentage as below:
Subtract difference Distortion %
Less than 1/4" 1%
1/2" 2%
3/4" 3%
1" 4%
4. Indicate the skew movement direction of warp along fabric length
(Standard Requirement: With Twill Line "WTL" - 4% max or Against Twill Line
"ATL" - 2%).
5. Repeat procedure 1 to 4 for each specimen and report result in left side, center
and right side separately.
